Who is Solomon the Elephant?

Our collective’s name, Solomon, originates from the main character of the book “The Elephant’s Journey” by Portuguese author Jose Saramago.

The book tells the story of Solomon, an elephant who does not speak with words but with actions. The king of Portugal bought him from India and then gave him as a wedding gift to the Archduke of Austria, so Solomon had to travel from India to Lisbon and then all the way to Vienna on foot.

During his trek across Europe, Solomon and his entourage faced challenging encounters that turned him into a “mirror” where all human illusions, fears and misconceptions were projected. He was called names, given false identities and had various tales told about him. He, however, was just an elephant traveling.

In our eyes, Solomon is a symbolic representative of all those were forced to make cross cultural travels in order to survive, faced stereotypical and hateful behaviors and were treated as lesser human beings.

Within life’s unexpected possibilities, we support them and celebrate their existence.
